Learning about what children need
The place of parenting programmes
âI was cynical about coming to a group-based dadâs course but not only have I learnt lots of practical information and skills, which improve my confidence as a father, I really enjoyed discussing the role of a father. The group discussion was very open and let us ask questions and explore topics. Iâd come back for more.â Parent, study P
There are numerous structured parenting programmes in use across the UK, many of which have been described and evaluated in other books (Moran et al., 2004; Lindsay and Cullen, 2011; Donkin, 2014). They include the Positive Parenting Programme (known as Triple P), Mellow Parenting and The Incredible Years, although there are many others. Some parents told us that they had enjoyed these and that at least parts of the content had been helpful. Some liked the experience of getting together with other parents to share stories and learn about strategies for coping with childrenâs behaviour. They found that it helped to know that they were not the only parents who were struggling with the demands of caring for children.
However, other parents said they found taking part in a group-based structured programme difficult; some had problems getting out to programmes at set times, and others felt nervous about meeting other people and preferred one-to-one sessions with a practitioner. Talking about this more personal approach, one parent said:
âItâs been very different than I thought. I like the individual aspect and that itâs not in a group. Itâs more about me and building my confidence than all about being a parent.â Parent, study J
